John Peel Day set for Oct 12 on BBC

BBC Radio 1 announced today details of the second John Peel Day to take place on Thursday 12 October 2006 - the anniversary of John last broadcast on the network. More than 500 events took place last year across the UK and the world.
Once again music fans, bands, artists and DJs are being encouraged to stage their own gigs and club nights in honour of John Peel's amazing legacy and contribution to music. On the day Radio 1 will be reporting live from the events from across the UK, talking to the people who are staging them and the fans who are attending. Throughout the day the station will be playing music that John championed and bands that he broke as well as a whole host of classic live Peel Sessions.
Radio 1's Peel Night, a very special gig dedicated to John, will take place during the BBC Electric Proms, a celebration of new and innovative music styles taking place from 25 to 29 October. The night will be held in the Electric Ballroom, Camden. The line-up and exact date will be confirmed nearer the time.
John's widow Sheila Ravenscroft said: "I hope many bands and venues will want to celebrate John's anniversary. There is so much good new music around - everyone should have a fantastic night."
Jason Carter, Editor, Live Music and Events, Radio 1, said: "Last yearEs first John Peel Day was a phenomenal success with over 500 artists and bands and music promoters at every level hosting live events both within the UK and around the world in John Peel's name. October the 12th is a day in which we can celebrate the great man, new music and continue his legacy."
